Helping our Kids Grow in their Walk with God Everyday…A.C.T.S. with AIO (Giveaway)

(This post contains an affiliate link. I also received a free copy of the “Favorites” Adventures in Odyssey CD Album for writing the series of three articles this summer. All opinions expressed in this article are my own. Here is a copy of our full disclosure policy. FYI– I won’t write about or promote any product, service or organization that I don’t personally support or feel comfortable recommending to my friends and family.)

Our summer has been incredibly full! We’ve accomplished a lot and had many adventures as a family. Right now we are finishing preparations for the Missions Yard Sale and Bake Sale my boys are helping lead for our church to reach their personal goals of raising funds to send to International and North American Missions and we just got back from a week long road trip visiting grandparents and friends! Whew!

One of the things I am learning in this new journey is that finding a way to set up a routine in the midst of the craziness of life throughout the year can make a big difference in how our days and lives look as a family. There are a few routines that I have found make a huge difference in how our day goes no matter whether we are in the middle of a road trip or at home.

This wasn’t an easy discovery for me in the midst of the chaos of this past year’s “life after our serious accident” life. But we are finally getting the hang of it and I am amazed at what a difference a few special routines can make! We found the same to be true when my son was in public school a few years back so this isn’t just a “homeschooling family” thing…which I am sure you know!

As we move from the adventure of summer activities and road-trips to getting ready to start a new school year, establishing healthy, positive routines can be a tough job. It is so easy to fill our days and evenings with so many activities, extra curricular activities like music lessons, sports practices, and after-school time clubs can overshadow the routines that build family and healthy habits—both physically and spiritually.

One routine that my boys and I started doing together this summer has been a huge blessing to all of us! Believe it or not, it was Michael, our five-year old who suggested we do it as a family and it helps me to help them to grow in their walk with the Lord every day and strengthens mine at the same time.

Every morning after breakfast we have “Bible and Devotion Time” now. This is something I used to try to fit in before bed but it didn’t always work for us at that time. Michael suggested that we all sit down and read (look at for him) our own devotion books for a few minutes first. Then we rotate days on reading our devotion and a Bible verse or passage aloud to the rest of our family and then talk about it. When we are finished talking about it we close with sharing prayer requests. And it is working!

I am amazed at what a difference it is making in how our days get started and it only takes 10-15 minutes a day!

The boys each have a special devotional book that they love to read from and I was tickled when I found out that Adventures in Odyssey wanted to GIVE ALL OF YOU access to a special download of a WEEK’S WORTH OF DEVOTIONS from it FREE!

It is one of the great new Adventures in Odyssey products released this year is 90 Devotions for Kids, aimed at kids 8 to 12, but my 5 year old loves them too! This soft-cover book draws you in with illustrations, puzzles, and kid-friendly applications. It also includes a daily Bible verse, daily challenges, words of encouragement from different AIO characters, and more. Even if your kids aren’t already Adventures in Odyssey fans, they’ll enjoy these daily devotionals, and get to know the Odyssey crew along the way.

This devotional, and the edition coming this fall (90 Devotions for Kids: Life Changing Values from the Book of Matthew) are great tools to help your kids put a regular pause in their day for Bible reading, prayer, and thoughts about God. If you start now—by the first day of school, you’ll already have a spiritual component scheduled into your kids’ routine. After that, everything else will hopefully just fall into line!

I love watching Josh get so excited over what he is reading in it and his excitement over looking up the daily verses in his Bible! He loves puzzles and games and looks forward to those special features on their designated days too. Michael, age 5, even loves listening to his big brother read the daily devotions aloud and I love that each devotion ends with a daily challenge and a memory verse for them to work on.

As you know, our kids follow our lead in things like this too so why not click over and download the FREE week’s worth of section 12 of this special book from the theme of Serving Others and set aside fifteen minutes every day for your family to spend with God in this way? There is even a free sample of one of the fun puzzles included in each section!

976825: Adventures in Odyssey® 90 Devotions for Kids Adventures in Odyssey® 90 Devotions for KidsBy Tyndale HouseWritten by the Adventures in Odyssey team, your family will spend 13 weeks doing 90 devotions that will help parents teach their kids about God’s Word and make the truths of the Bible accessible to their kids. Join Whit, Connie, Eugene and all of your AIO friends as you discover a new theme each week. Each week includes an overview to introduce the theme, seven devotions which reference AIO dramas, and an activity, puzzle, or game to reinforce the core biblical truths taught during that week. Recommended for ages 6-12.

It won’t be hard to get your kids interested in devotions after they check this book out. I love how each devotion gives real examples from life that kids can relate to and each one sparks conversation if you want to do them as a family. If you prefer for your son or daughter to use it on their own for personal devotion time it works great for that too.

The biggest challenge I had with Josh when he got his was to keep him from reading a whole week’s worth in one day! He gets that into them! And there is nothing like working on the dishes and having him come into the kitchen and tell me there is something he really needs to read to me that he found in it.

Josh is getting 90 Devotions for KIds: Life Changing Values from the Book of Matthew as one of his Christmas presents this year and I know he will be thrilled! He has read the devotions in the first one, 90 Days of Devotions for Kids over and over again and still gets a lot out of them.

Having a time set aside for reading devotions has a big effect on the moods of everyone in our house. Helping our kids to grow in their walk with the Lord isn’t always easy but this is a resource that makes that process a little bit easier. I know we all feel a little better afterward.

I am excited to announce that not only is Adventures in Odyssey giving everyone a week’s worth of free devotions from 90 Devotions for Kids…

About the author

Mary Joy

I am a broken daughter of God and a work in progress. I am passionate about encouraging women to embrace God's grace and faithfulness as I discover and share His faithfulness, grace and even joy in the messiness of my journey as a widowed (less than 2 yrs), homeschooling mom with a missionary's heart. I am in awe of how God fills me up and carries me through each day. My Heavenly Father leads me as I continue to parent and home school my two recovering and very active boys and encourage my beautiful teenage step-daughter (long distance) during her first year in of college. In every moment I see incredible evidence of God's healing love, grace and faithfulness. I am so blessed to be the creator, manager, and an author of Unwrapping His Grace as I lean on my Savior to lead us in this special web-ministry.

Hi Mary Joy!!! I shared on FB, Twitter, signed up for email updates and am commenting. I LOVE AIO and last year my grandson won a microphone and backdrop after recording a script for an AIO contest.
What I love about AIO devos are that they are written so that children get the message. They understand the lesson being shared in each devo. The prayers are nice to because they specifically go along with the devo. If left up to me, my prayers can get a bit long, so these nice, short and too the point prayers make sure to keep each child spirit and mind on the goal, the lesson in that devo.
Thank you to Unwrapping His Grace, AIO and Focus on the Family (I still like the name Poke Us In The Family!) for this wonderful opportunity and free gift!

This was Bradley’s video for last year’s AIO contest. He had to read their script.
