Part 2: Adventures in Odyssey A.C.T.S. Summer Challenge…Imagine Creative Ways to Serve AND GIVEAWAY!!!

This is part two in the Adventures in Odyssey A.C.T.S. Summer of serving Challenge!!! (Sponsored post)

This time our theme is… Imagine creative and fun ways to serve using your unique gifts!

Children are spending more and more time in front of TVs, iPads, computers, and video games. That doesn’t leave much room for kids to dream up their own visual images—like the ones that fill their minds when they hear a great story! Rather than passively receiving images, kids actively engage in making images themselves when they hear a good story. Their imaginations are enriched and stimulated, and the material becomes more personal and memorable. My boys LOVE listening to the great stories from Adventures in Odyssey…especially the episodes that involve the Imagination Station!

Adventures in Odyssey is all about great stories—and the power of the imagination. The beloved audio dramas are heard on over 700 radio stations, and AIO has recently expanded to books and devotionals—including The Imagination Station series, a fast-growing line of early chapter readers. You can check them out by downloading a FREE e-book of Imagination Station #1: Voyage with the Vikings!

I was so thrilled with Adventures in Odyssey wanted to sponsor a giveaway for all of our readers here on Unwrapping His Grace! These three exciting Imagination Station books are filled with action-packed adventure that can’t help but inspire the imagination! When they step into The Imagination Station, they’ll be whisked away with Patrick and Beth to embark on a journey around the world and through time. I had to keep them hidden in my home office so that Josh wouldn’t dive right into them! LOL He’s read “Voyage with the Vikings” and can’t wait to read the next two!

My Josh describes them as a very cool, Christian version of something like Magic Tree house. He says if your kids like Magic Tree house they will LOVE the Imagination Station series!

Summer is the perfect time to live our own stories as families!

And Adventures in Odyssey encourages kids to write their OWN stories, as they join in ACTS: A Call to Serve! AIO is helping children use their imaginations to serve their family, community, and world this summer—maybe by sending a care package to a missionary or baking cookies for the local fire department.

Check out www.whitsend.org/acts for details and a chance to win fabulous prizes, including a mission trip with a parent to Costa Rica!

More important than prizes are the stories your child will tell about the creative ways they served others, and how they grew as a result. And who knows…what they come up with really might change the world!

This boy certainly inspires me!~~A Creative Story of Service

Matthew with app

Fourteen-year-old Matthew, a dedicated Adventures in Odyssey fan and natural tech whiz, was inspired by a trip to the Apple store to create a smartphone app for his church. Since then, he has created 21 apps for different ministries, including his local pregnancy resource center, Joni and Friends (an international ministry for people with disabilities), and even an “Adventures in Odyssey Fan News” app! Matthew used his God-given talents and imagination to bless others through technology.

Have your kids said those dreaded words…”Mom, I’m bored!” Maybe it is time to see which of your kid’s unique gifts are waiting to be unleashed for God’s use?

Adventures in Odyssey FREE “Summer of Service Kit” filled with great ideas for serving for children and parents! They are simple and fun to do. Josh loves all the puzzles and we have used some of the service ideas too! It is chock full of ways to pray for missionaries around the world, family devotions encouraging a servant’s heart in all of us, puzzles, activities, and inspiring stories of how other children are choosing to use their gifts to serve God!

Our family has a passion for serving and helping missionaries in North America and around the world. So this week we finish sorting through all of Josh and Michael’s toys so that they can each pick ten toys to put in the Missions yard sale our family is hosting/leading with our church later this month. And we are excited about using the “Surprise Service” ideas to secretly serve and bless some of our neighbors next week!

Our family has accepted the challenge to make these summer months a time that counts for God by learning to better serve in our family at home and finding ways to make it as much fun as possible. And we are talking about the gifts and talents that God gives us and how we are called to serve others whether it means helping out at church, reaching out to neighbors with a surprise blessing of service, raising money for missions, or working as a family to see how many cuddly “Jesus Loves Me Sheep” ($5 each) we can give money to Operation Christmas Child so that they can add these precious sheep to shoeboxes that will go out this Christmas! Serving keeps them busy and helps gives us opportunities to pass on the blessings after being so blessed by so many people during this first year following our tragic accident on July 15, 2012.

We know God has a purpose for our lives…just as He has for your life and the lives of your children. Inspiring our children to begin living their own stories of serving others and then sharing them with the people at Adventures in Odyssey helps them to begin sharing how God is working through their lives and turns their imaginations onto the exciting adventure of serving the Lord by serving the people who need His love in this world!

So let’s get creative! It is time to let our kids’ imaginations go wild as we let them brainstorm how they can help others and spread the Gospel this summer! They are never too young to serve and live their lives with God’s purpose. It is so much more rewarding and life changing than spending the summer achieving the next level of a video game…

Even God’s Word reminds us…

The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. Jeremiah 1:7

Every day I remind myself the habits and character they form during these growing up years will form who they are in the future as men and women of God…I pray they learn to have servant’s hearts that are passionate for serving our Lord.

About the author

Mary Joy

I am a broken daughter of God and a work in progress. I am passionate about encouraging women to embrace God's grace and faithfulness as I discover and share His faithfulness, grace and even joy in the messiness of my journey as a widowed (less than 2 yrs), homeschooling mom with a missionary's heart. I am in awe of how God fills me up and carries me through each day. My Heavenly Father leads me as I continue to parent and home school my two recovering and very active boys and encourage my beautiful teenage step-daughter (long distance) during her first year in of college. In every moment I see incredible evidence of God's healing love, grace and faithfulness. I am so blessed to be the creator, manager, and an author of Unwrapping His Grace as I lean on my Savior to lead us in this special web-ministry.

My kids are serving others this summer by decorating lunch bags for children whose parents cannot afford to provide lunch for them while on summer break. We also donate to missionary families.

As a family we serve others by helping individuals either by mowing their lawn, cooking them a hot meal, helping them with a task that they need help with. We also visit and call individual families and pray for them as well as minister to them. We follow the leading of the Lord when it comes to serving our family, community and missions :)

My little 6yo niece and I like to bake bread for those in the community. It gets her involved in not only being neighborly, but in the giving to others and seeing that there are those out there who are blessed in the giving. LOVE that there is a Christian alternative to the Magic Treehouse Series! My niece is 6 and we began the Magic Treehouse books a few weeks back, but I would MUCH rather have her read these. I would love to have these for her!

One VBS we attended in June had the kids bring in canned and non perishable food to give to needy children in the community.
