When I heard that Melissa Michaels, creator of The Inspired Room, the very first blog I ever found in the huge world of blogland had written her first e-book I was thrilled!
Melissa is a very special lady…although she would say that she is nothing remarkable. You see…Melissa started The Inspired Room in 2007. What started as an on-line experiment by someone who was unfamiliar with the world of blogging has exploded into one of the most read home decorating websites on the internet!!! She is a wife to Jerry, mom to three very creative children (Kylee, Courtney, and Luke). She also is a writer for DaySpring (a division of Hallmark and a guest contributor to Williams-Sonoma Designer Marketplace. The Inspired Room has been featured on HGTV.com, Apartment Therapy, Better Homes & Gardens, Ladies Home Journal, and other publications in print and around the web.
NOT a DIY Diva comes from some of her best work on The Inspired Room and her own life. Every word resonates with my own experience as a wife, mother and homemaker! She is all about keeping it real and being yourself…especially when it comes to your home and how you live in it. Here is one of my favorite quotes from this amazing new e-book…
Living authentically means embracing your season of life and finding simple ways to really live it, creatively and appropriately. We can be frustrated by the less than perfect season we are in, or we can embrace the blessing of living in the moment, and accept the quirks and inconveniences that go along with it. It is all in how we look at it.” (Melissa Michaels NOT a DIY Diva)
Melissa admits that she is recovering from something she has coined as…“magazine cover-itis”. Through sharing her own story…Melissa helps us to remember to create our own unique homes and not to think we need to create every cute, creative home decoration or piece of furniture that all of the “popular girls” in blogland are making. We need to remember that…
“When life inspires our home, our home inspires life.” ~ Melissa Michaels
I love how she reminds us that we are all unique and our families are unique. She encourages us to take things slowly and let our homes evolve as our family grows and changes. Getting encouragement and ideas from books, magazines and blogs is good…but too many ideas…even simple ones…can overwhelm us and plant seeds of discontent with our reality.
Her book is divided into two parts…
Part 1 Overcoming Obstacles on the Journey to Authenticity
Part 2 Authentic Living: Staying Inspired
As I soaked in each chapter I was reminded of one of my favorite things about Melissa’s writing…what she writes about being authentic with our homes applies to how we journey to authentically live our lives. Melissa has a very special way of writing like I imagine she talks…relaxed…easy going…and very real. I laughed out loud several times while reading this gem because I could relate to so much of what she was talking about!
But the beauty of this e-book is that Melissa shares her own step by step process to discovering your own style for your home and then gives great ideas for how to do it in your home without being a DIY or having a huge budget! She encourages readers to shop their garages, basements, and hardware stores to get easy, unique ideas that help you to express who you are. I was so thrilled to see some of my favorite articles from The Inspired Room with even more details to help me with my own process.
One of the things that Melissa stresses is to have courage to be yourself! Your home doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s and really shouldn’t. It should express your/your family’s own style, interests and season of life. She encourages us to embrace the season of life we are in and reminds us that a new season of messes will follow this one as our children grow up. I just wanted to yell “Yes! That’s it!” “So true!” as I read every chapter!! I have been reading her thoughts as she shared them on The Inspired Room for the past two years and it is this passion to have the courage to live and be authentically who we are that inspired me to step out of my own comfort zones…stop trying to be like someone else…and follow my passion to share my own journey to live a surrendered life in all of its real messiness.
This e-book is filled with encouragement and inspiration and the constant reminder to be yourself and stop pursuing perfection and enjoy living and creating your home.
Melissa has taken the time to compile the articles from The Inspired Room that most express her message of authentic living and organized them in a beautiful, easy to use e-book that is filled with a wonderful balance of how-to’s and inspiration. This is an e-book that I have printed out because I have covered it in highlighting and notes as I work through the steps and ideas she offers. This is an e-book…just like her website…that helps me to have the courage to create a home and a life that is authentically…uniquely me…embracing the joys and messiness of who we are as a family.
Melissa inspires and encourages us to fall in love and be content with our own homes!
